So, You want to start a blog?

I started my blog a few months ago just as naive as a person could possibly be. I didn’t read any blog regularly and would really only read a blog if someone shared a post on my Facebook timeline. A few people suggested to me from time to time that I start a blog but I kept brushing them off. I didn’t really know the first thing about blogging. Plus in school, I didn’t really like writing. Why would I willingly start writing now?

After hearing several people explain how writing a blog was not to be compared with writing an English term paper and realizing I enjoyed posting some longer Facebook posts, I decided to take the plunge. I started a free blog and wrote in secret for 2 weeks just in case I hated it. Turns out I did kinda enjoy it and I eventually let it be known I had a blog.

As time had past I realized I had no clue what I was getting into and it began to take up more and more of my time. My TV watching really began to take a hit. I’m entire seasons behind on some of my favorite shows. I have no idea how I’m going to ever be able to catch up.

I also found out you have to read all these other blogs. Dozens and dozens of other blogs. It’s sort of a blogger courtesy; you read my blog I’ll read yours. Aside from the incredible amount of time this takes up, some blogs are really bad. Like really bad. Not that I want to go around judging people but sometimes it looks like the person didn’t even try. Like this blog for example or this one.  You have to wade through the bad ones to find some real gems!

Did you really just click on those links to try and see a terrible blog? You should be ashamed. I mean honestly.

The other thing that keeps happening to me is that every time something even remotely funny happens everyone around informs me I’ll have to make a blog post about it. You wouldn’t believe how many things are only funny if you were there.

The thing that trips me out the most is when acquaintances will tell me they have read my blog or while we are talking they will randomly start a sentence with “It’s like that one post you made…” Wait, wait, hold on. You’ve read my blog? Thanks for never leaving a comment anywhere ever or even giving me a lame “like” when I share my post to my Facebook page. I had absolutely no idea you were reading my blog. But I’m honored.

It makes me wonder who else reads my blog and isn’t letting on. Probably Mr. Obama if I had to guess, he has 2 daughters and he can likely relate to some of my parenting posts. So anyhow, thanks for reading Mr. President, if you could just work it into your next speech: “It’s like the Sunshine Dad says: ‘Parenting is the hardest job you’ll ever have: good parenting is even harder than that!'”

Until next time, you have yourself a great week. And please don’t forget, if you are so inclined to do so, you can click on the Top Daddy Blogs logo below or in my sidebar once a day to vote for me. Thanks.

  1. Oh dear I clicked on the first link thinking there was actually going to be a crappy blog there…I haven’t watched TV since I started blogging which is around a month or so ago; there’s not enough hours in the day for TV now!

  2. I am laughing out loud right now! This is hilarious and spot on! I also only started blogging a few months ago and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Thank you for your refreshing authenticity πŸ™‚

    1. “refreshing authenticity” I think I need to quote you in my publicity packet. Just kidding, I don’t have a publicity packet. Is that even a thing?
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Hope you have a great weekend with your 2 sweet kiddos! πŸ™‚

  3. Isn’t it amazing how a little pet project turns into a second job. Minus the pay of course, but I’m sure if you are like me it’s quite enjoyable the social interaction with strangers all over the world make its a all worth it. I’m with you though TV watching has taken a big backseat.

    1. Seriously! I don’t think I worked this hard at my real job when I had one. Of course my real job wasn’t this much fun! (Ok actually I used to run summer camps and my job was CRAZY fun, it just paid crap, that’s why my wife works now) I do miss my old friend the TV though.

    1. lol. You gotta make sure. I wish I knew how to write a program that when people clicked on the link it just redirected them back to their own blog and turned on their webcam to record their expressions. That would be great!!
      Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Just found your blog through Erin! Howdy! I also just started a few months back. It is a totally different world, a huge learning curve, and I spend more time with all the other stuff than actual writing! Who knew?!?!?! But it has opened us up to a lot of new possibilities as a family and it gives me a platform to shout out my insane ramblings, so that’s something right? πŸ˜‰ I’ll be following your blog! And hitting like when I can!

    1. Thanks Erin!!
I’ve seen many people say blogging is 20% time spent writing and 80% time spent doing other stuff. No one tells you that at the beginning πŸ™ I want to spend 20% writing and 80% reading all the great comments people leave me. lol yeah right
Anytime you can be applauded for shouting insane ramblings it’s a good day!! πŸ™‚

  5. My hand is raised by two followed both links to the”bad blogs.” Your post rings true blogging is time-consuming and there is much more reading involved than I thought it would be when I started my first blog (I have two). It is very surprising when someone tells me they’ve read my blog jokingly written in posts addressing them to my three readers but this is a labor of love and I’m glad I’m around like-minded people — bloggers.

    1. Oh no doubt, you’ve got to check πŸ™‚ Funny how things sometimes don’t end up being like what you thought they would. Hope you’re having a great weekend. Thanks for stopping by.

  6. Really really enjoyed reading this because it’s so very true. I smiled. I even lol’d. I did not click on the links because I know you. My blog is sure to be there because we are blogging rivals. Your blog should be there too because you always steal my ideas. πŸ˜‰ Ha. Good work buddy!

    1. Hmmm I should have made your blog one of the links. As soon as you have an idea worth stealing I’ll be all over it πŸ˜‰ haha
Have a good evening buddy, thanks for your good words.

  7. My situation plays out exactly like yours. I just got into blogging back in January. it’s been a lot of fun. And you quickly find out who liked the blog to be nice and who actually reads it. But a lot of my time at night has been taken up by trying to read and keep up with other blogs. Also trying to find the right formula for that perfect blog.
I love when people tell you “you should blog about this or that” and like you said, some things are just a “you had to be there” moment.

  8. I definitely clicked on the first link, just curious! πŸ™‚ Actually I just started a blog as well and I wanted to make sure that you weren’t linking to my site! It’s crazy how much work a new blog can be…I told my husband recently that I couldn’t remember the last time I’ve worked so hard on something while simultaneously feeling so clueless (other than raising my daughter of course πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing!

  9. Nearly clicked on the links, but way too busy. I decided to use my latest bout of maternity leave, to update my website, revisit my neglected blog, and write a book. All whilst looking after a bub, driving half an hour to school drop off, and working after 10pm when my night owl cherubs finally fall asleep. I am so far behind in my TV series, I have to leave some of the only adult conversations I have, so I don’t accidently here plot reveals. Good on you. Looking forward to hearing more. I always need a laugh.

  10. Haha, I assumed it had to be one of your posts you put on those links. Yes, I clicked on it, I feel bad now! Blogging sucks up a lot of my time, too but I was getting sick of TV anyway. Most of it at least. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the party!

  11. I started my blog just over twelve months ago and still get mortified if someone I know has actually read one of my posts. In fact not many people know I blog; except for other bloggers.

And I couldn’t bring myself to click on the links in case it was my blog you were highlighting….It wasn’t was it?

  12. Blogging just kind of sucks you in and takes over your life! I find its the same people will say oh you should blog about this specific event – but when I start trying to I realise it’s really only funny or interesting if you were there!
I always feel a bit embarrassed when people I know say they have read my blog. Even though I really like that they do too.

  13. I know what you mean about your TV suffering, I rarely sit down to watch a show now as I’m usually tap tap tapping away at the laptop! This time last year (before my blog), my evenings were filled with back to back 24….now my husband is left to sit watching boxsets of House on his own!

    1. 24! What a great show. I’ve also noticed laundry doesn’t get folded anymore since I used to fold it while I watched TV at night. Such is the difficult life of a blogger πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by.

  14. Hilarious and I love this post!! I started blogging just recently and also noticed how much time it takes. But it does feel really good when someone says “Hey, I love your blog!” Awesome post ☺

  15. I just started my blog in March. It takes up so much time but I love it! I wish there was more time in the day to devote to blogging πŸ™‚ #wineandboobs

  16. I’m a new blogger as well – and you’re right, wow the time taken to really make it flourish! Some days I’m not even sure where I’ve set the baby down (kidding, kidding). I got a real laugh out of clicking on the links. Shame on me! #wineandboobs

  17. I only started blogging just under a year ago and it really has taken over my life! Great to hear that I am not alone in this fact, your post’s links made me laugh out loud! #wineandboobs

  18. Love this! Sounds like me, except I’m a mom! The bad blog thing got me… I was SOOOO hoping it wasn’t mine. I just had to check!! lol

  19. The Mother says – First time reading your blog (and yep! I clicked on the ‘bad’ blogs – Naughty!!) Welcome to blogging. I do enjoy reading the Dad blogs – it’s nice to get the other side of the story πŸ™‚ #wineandboobs

  20. I enjoyed your post, it was both funny and so true! personally, I think I’ll just keep mine to myself, as far as family/friends are concerned. Just skip the whole lecture/suggestion problem. Found you through the #wineandboobs link-up.

  21. Love this! It is true! A lot of times I read posts on my phone when I am out and about and it is like fighting a war to leave a comment from your phone, one wrong move and your like screw it!
