Why does the morning happen so early?

I’ve never been a morning person. Ever. Everyday as a kid getting up for school was such a battle. I can remember dragging myself downstairs to the kitchen table and falling back asleep waiting for my mom or dad to get me a bowl of cereal or a pop tart or whatever I was eating that morning. I would get 10 hours of sleep, so it wasn’t like I needed to go to bed earlier. It just took me a while to get my body in gear. It still does.

Well, my kids don’t have this problem. My oldest child is now in his third year of having to wake up for school (VPK, K & 1st grade). I’ve never once in 3 years set an alarm clock. We’ve never even been close to not waking up on time. My kids actually have a “reverse alarm clock” where they can’t get up out of bed until the alarm turns green. They lay there in bed and stare at it, sometimes for up to an hour, before they are allowed to get up. It’s currently set for 6:45am. They don’t understand the concept of weekend.

I usually shuffle my feet downstairs hoping I set the coffee pot the night before. The kids meanwhile are running circles around me, talking 100 mph, asking a million questions and being entirely too loud. It’s like my own personal pre-7am nightmare everyday. Recently, to my surprise, my 6 year old slept in to 7:05. He must have been exhausted!

He came down and joined everyone else at the table and started eating. He looked up from his food and said to me quite solemnly:

“Dad I wish I had a substitute today.”

Oh no, I started to think he was having some sort of issue at school with his teacher. I like his teacher and he seems to like her too so I was intrigued as to why he would want a substitute. So, of course, I began to dig deeper.

“Why what’s wrong? You don’t like your teacher anymore?”

He just looked at me and said: “No, not for her. I want a substitute for me. I think I’d rather just stay home today.”

Ha, I couldn’t help but chuckle at that. Welcome to the next 12 years of your life son. I feel ya, but get used to it. Come to think of it, I think I want a substitute too. Just until 9:00 am everyday, that’s not too much to ask is it?

Enjoy your Monday morning, I hope you all have a great week! Give a click below if you have a chance. Thanks

  1. I couldn’t agree more with your son! I’m feeling the same way as I trudge to work this morning! Pitch black still outside…. When do we change the blocks again?:) Have a great start to your week!

  2. my kids need a reverse alarm clock!!!! They are up just before the sun every day! I am actually a morning person, so I know they get this from me. But I still would like to covet some weekend time here and there.
Adorable story about the substitute…I love how their little minds work sometimes. Very clever. 🙂 #ftmob

  3. Oh bless him! There are definitely days when I can relate to this one – a substitute would be very nice this time of year when it’s still dark in the mornings (makes it even harder to keep going) and think I would quite like one for the meltdown moments too! Thanks for linking up to #ftmob 🙂
